Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

Songs of the Gathering

Rest. Rhythm. Grace.

Followers of Jesus have the joy (and challenge) of being called to gather together. Although there are many reasons for this gathering, I am very passionate about the music part of it, particularly in the area of writing songs that give voice to my community as it gathers to worship. Songsofthegathering.ca is a place where I can share some of my passion and writing, and perhaps even to resource some individuals or communities in their worship through music.

I would also love for songsofthegathering.ca to one day be a place where others who write music not to try to become famous or get signed but who simply write to give voice to their community in worship can share what they're up to as well. If that's you, please email hello@songsofthegathering.ca and tell me your story!

In the RECORDINGS section you can listen to songs that I have had the opportunity to record over the years, some done as personal projects (Remain, The Eucharist of Beulah and Pearl, Psalm 119) and others done for Spring Garden Church, Drawn Above being a collaborative effort of all of the SGC musicians, and the rest being simple recordings to help teach new music that was written to go along our communities fall curriculum. Also, I have included a "Songs of Friends" album which is a compilation of songs written and recorded by other Spring Gardeners either from Drawn Above or one of the fall curriculum CDs.

In the COMPOSITIONS section you can find music to all of the songs I have written, which is much more extensive than what you find in the Recordings area. You can also find the full introduction and liturgy to The Eucharist of Beulah and Pearl, both of which are projects that took as long to research and prepare as it took to write the music!

Finally, the STORE is simply the place where, if you want to buy Remain, The Eucharist of Beulah and Pearl, or Psalm 119 you can. Albums recorded with Spring Garden Church are available to anyone for free. Just email hello@songsofthegathering.ca and I'll send you a download link.

What to say? I'm a guy who believes in a God who, in His infinite and seemingly bizarre wisdom, created this thing called "the Church" (and by "Church" I mean the messed up family of people who follow Jesus, not some particular model of building or Sunday morning formula) to reflect, participate in and enact His character and Kingdom in the world. I'm a guy who believes that the gathering of this family is a key part of that, whether it be small or large groups, Sunday mornings in a building owned by an incorporated 'church' or Tuesday nights at Swiss Chalet with a group of friends. I'm a guy who believes that an important part of the gathering of God's people, and part of individual faith, is being intentional about expressing our worship of God to Him and in community. I'm also a guy who believes that for all kinds of theological, ontological, metaphysical, sociological, mnemonic-al and cardiological (well, in the non-physical sense of the heart as the core of our being) reasons, music should have a significant role. As each gathered group of Jesus-followers is different, so each gathered group's worship should reflect and come out of who they are, and therefore the music (which is simply one aspect of corporate and personal worship) should come out of and reflect that particular group. Hence I'm a guy that believes in writing songs of the gathering of God's people, as part of giving voice to my particular community.

Finally, I'm a guy who apparently has trouble getting to the point.
